AKA Great Lakes Region - Leadership, Charlene Truitt Nelson
Soror Charlene Truitt Nelson was installed as the Great Lakes Regional Director in July 2010. She is a native of Dayton, Ohio and has been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. since 1974. She was initiated in Alpha Lambda Chapter, Toledo University , Toledo, Ohio. She is a charter member of Iota Iota Chapter, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio and refers to herself as "home grown" Great Lakes Region. Upon graduation from Bowling Green State University, she affiliated with Beta Eta Omega Chapter, Dayton, Ohio and has been actively involved for 30 years.
Soror Charlene believes that "to whom much is given, much is required." With that statement as her guiding principle and a sincere desire to serve others, Soror Charlene continues to work tirelessly in the organization and has worked in a leadership capacity within the organization at every level. She has served Beta Eta Omega Chapter as president, vice-president, financial secretary and parliamentarian; she has also served as chairman of committees too numerous to mention. In 1988, she was voted "Soror of the Year" by the members of Beta Eta Omega Chapter and that honor simply inspired her to work harder.
On the regional level, Soror Charlene has served as Chairman of the Great Lakes Scholarship Committee, Time and Place Committee and Program Committee. She has also served on the Great Lakes Regional Nominating Committee, EAF Committee and as Chairman of the 2004 Great Lakes Regional Conference. Internationally, she has served on the Program Committee and the Tellers Committee.
Soror Charlene is also active in the Dayton Community. She holds membership in many organizations and is a member of Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church. She is currently employed by the USAF after completing a thirty-one year tenure in the automotive industry.
The opportunities and growth afforded Soror Charlene as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has been priceless! She is humbled by her position, grateful for the vote of confidence by the region and determined to make a difference. After all, by her estimation, her experience will be unforgettable and her tenure historical.
